Coffee in Madagascar

Madagascar is home to some of the finest, most unique arabica and robusta coffee varieties in the world. Samples from last year's harvest were awarded 'Specialty Grade' status by certified coffee graders. They achieved ‘Specialty Grade’ for their medium bodied texture with a blend of sweet caramel notes and floral aromas.

Despite the rare quality, Malagasy coffee is not available on the international market. Here’s why :

  • Malagasy farmers are economically vulnerable.
  • Export coffee markets are volatile.

These dynamics lead Malagasy farmers to prioritize crops that have stable markets and are guaranteed to sell. Consequently, the small amounts of coffee grown are consumed by households or sold in local markets, never leaving the country. Until now…
